“Sorry. Bad timing. I just . . . I can’t help but think that since he’s come to town, you have been more open with me in days than you have in years.” “You’re praising him for breaking my heart?”
“Kadence starts school here tomorrow.”
“What?” “That’s part of why I’m here. I don’t want her growing up in Vegas. I don’t want her part of that world.” “So you came here? To my world?” “Quincy is where you are.”
“I have never been, and never will be, in love with Vivienne,” he said. “I have never stopped loving you.” “Foster—” “And I never will.”
His nevers mirrored my own.
That’s why this hurt so much. I’d given him my heart and never taken it back.
We couldn’t be over. Not yet. Not if she kissed me like this. I kissed her fast and deep, then let her go.
“You’ll never be just Talia. Not to me.”
“Me. I am Kadence’s father. She is mine.”
“And she is not mine.”
Fuck, but she was perfect. There would never be another woman, only Talia, wearing one of my old T-shirts.
“Talia.” “Don’t let go.” Her arms cinched tighter. “Never,”
“You didn’t kiss Vivienne?”
“Not on the mouth.”
“Earlier tonight, when you kissed me in the kitchen, Kadence saw us. She had this look on her face.” “She’s piecing it together.”
That Foster loved me.
“Vivienne is my friend,” Foster said. “Nothing more. I don’t kiss Vivienne. I am not in love with Vivienne. And I have never had sex with Vivienne.”
“I waited a long time for you, love. I’ll wait as long as you need. You are mine.” And he was here in Quincy to claim me.
“There hasn’t been another man.” His eyes narrowed. “What?”
“Fuck.” Foster’s hands came to my face,
“Say something,” I whispered. “How many?” “How many, what?”
“Orgasms.”
“Oh, God, baby.” “Fuck, you taste sweet, Tally.”
“Foster.” I clutched the bedding at my sides, my legs spreading even wider. “You’re mine, love. Say it.” “I’m yours.” “That’s my good girl.”
“I love you.” He rocked against my core. “Fuck, but I love you.” My heart stopped.
I loved him. I’d loved Foster for what felt like my entire life. I just . . . Why couldn’t I say it?
“Say it again,” I murmured, sleep creeping in at the edges. “I love you.”
Maybe if he said it over and over, I’d stop worrying that love wasn’t enough.
“Thanks.” Vivienne blew out a long breath. “How’s it going with you and Talia? Did she say she loves you yet?” Oh fuck.
“She never had my heart.” “She had seven years.” “And I’ll give you seventy.”
“Even if I don’t, I won the fight that matters.” “Your title fight?”
“You. You are the biggest fight of my life.” Oh, how I loved him.
“You won. You know that, right? You won.”
“Then I guess you’d better stop house hunting. Save the good homes for her.”
“What are you saying?”
“I don’t want you to leave,” I said. “I like coming home to you at night. I like waking up with you in my bed.” “You tell me this now? In public? When I can’t show you what it means to me?”
“You already had your dessert.” “There will be seconds.”
One moment, I was clutching the steering wheel, giving my pain to the darkness. The next, the Jeep’s door was open and a pair of strong arms wrapped around my body. Foster swept me into the house, his lips against my hair as he murmured, “Tally.”
While I sobbed for the lives I couldn’t save. And the lives I had.
She dragged in a shaky breath. “I don’t like crying in front of people.” “I’m not people. I’m the man who loves you. Tear stained or not.”
“Will you break my heart again?” “Never.” I’d die first. “Will you leave me?” “Never.” Not willingly. Not until the end. “Will you stop loving me?” “Never.” My love for her had no end. I’d love her in this world and the next. “Never, Tally. Never.”
“I love you. Only you. Always you.”
“I love you, Talia Eden.”
A champion. That man was a champion. And he was mine.
“We won.”
“Maybe if we’re lucky and he gets the design finished, we can get the builder to start earlier than expected. It would be so nice to move in before the baby is born.”
“What did you just say?”
“It happened faster than expected.”
“You’re pregnant.” “I’m pregnant.”
“You won’t stop, will you?”
