Glenna ain’t never gonna come up to my cabin, though. I heard a rumor she broke up with Toby sophomore year, and I asked her to homecoming, and she pretty much cried and ran away. Couldn’t get a stiffy for weeks after. Definite low point of my high school career.
Glenna’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, hands down, and I’ll never get used to it.
Guess she didn’t “take her face off” like my mom does. When I was little, I was low-key terrified that Mom really did peel it off at night and hang it from a hook or something. I knew she didn’t, but—I had a kid’s imagination.
Dad helps her sit, and Lil entwines arms with Mrs. Wall’s, their heads going together like schoolgirls gossiping. With her other hand, Lil urges Dad down to sit on her other side. She winds her arm through his, too.
And if I’m honest with myself—really, really honest—I didn’t smash Toby in the face because he insulted me. I was mad because he called Cash Wall a pig. He might be, but he’s my pig, dammit.
