A place so beautiful that even time held its breath.
Every hour you spend here is a day lost at home—if not more, I reminded myself sharply.
“A promise is not a kiss in the wind, to be thrown about without care,” I murmured to myself. “It is a piece of yourself that is given away and will not return until your pledge is fulfilled.” They
murmuring words in a tongue I could not understand.
“You really are the most troublesome girl,” he griped. “Leave the net. We have to go.”
“I’m spectating for now.” A small grin. “The Shiori I knew would consider this only the first round.” I laughed. I’d forgotten how much I missed him, our easy banter, our mutual love for food. I started at my plate again.
Wits, Shiori, I told myself. Fear is just a game; you win by playing.
“You’d do well to remember this: your heart is your home. Until you understand that, you belong nowhere.”
“Even still. With all the trouble you get into, Shiori . . . all the trouble you’re going to get into . . . you need whatever help you can get. Make sure he knows that.” After a pause, he said, “Make sure he deserves you.” There came a twinge in my heart, and my hands fell to my sides. Not long ago, I could have imagined falling in love with Seryu.
