The punch took him off his feet. He curled on the ground, cradling his gut. Declan leaned over him. “Done?” Brad nodded, his face twisted. “Okay. Anytime you want to speak to Rose, you let me know and we’ll do this again. Understand?”

“You’re supposed to tell him I’m a horrible cook, so he’ll go away and leave us alone.” Declan made an odd noise that sounded somewhat like a strangled cough. Georgie glanced at Declan. “He’ll never believe me. He likes your burgers.” “You have to convince him. Be charming. Use your Edger wiles.” Georgie furrowed his eyebrows in thought and looked at Declan. “Don’t eat her fried chicken. It tastes good, but she puts rat poison in it.” The inscrutable mask on Declan’s face shattered. He leaned forward and laughed.

He turned to her, and she found herself on the receiving end of that same smile. She could’ve stared at him for a year and never gotten tired. “That,” she said firmly. “Quit it.” “Is it upsetting you?” The adoring crowd seemed to have grown. “You’re going to cause a riot.” “You think so? I’ve never created a riot before. I did cause a brawl at the last formal. A large number of young women there actually arrived with the expectation of seducing me into matrimony, and a couple of their mothers came to blows. It was hilari—I mean, dreadful. Simply dreadful.”
