Facing Reality

Because I like the way he looks at me. I like the way he talks to me. I like the way I feel when I’m around him. Like I’m a real person and not some pawn in this weird game we’re all playing.

Why is he doing this for me? Staying up all night to drive across the state so I can see my dad. Why is he subjecting himself to this when he could just as easily be sleeping?

I look down at our entwined hands, watching as his thumb gently rubs circles on the back of my wrist. The feel of his rough fingers against my soft skin sends shivers up my spine. I know I should pull away. But I don’t. Looking up, I see he’s also staring at our hands. What is he thinking? Why isn’t he letting go? When his gaze lifts, it finds mine like a magnet. A spark of something new flashes in his eyes. Something that takes my breath away and makes my heart hammer in my chest.

“I’m not being weird, just curious how many shades of red your face can turn.”

“You’re going to have to stop looking at me like that for this to work though.”

When I’m with him, it’s like….he sees me. Like he truly gets me. I feel like I can be myself, no hiding. And I didn’t realize how much I wanted that until this moment.

most of all, I miss you. I miss your heart. I miss watching you pretend like you don’t have one, and I miss being the only person close enough to see that you’re lying.”

I look back at Ethan. He’s watching me with a smile that makes my heart swell. I feel like it might burst.
