According to critics such as Oluo, white people’s “taking” culture that is not theirs is wrong for two main reasons. The first is that they cannot know or share the roots of the culture that they are appropriating and that it hurts people who have been born into that culture to see others attempt to absorb it without feeling their pain. The second is that white people who appropriate other cultures apparently go on to make money from their appropriations, often unfairly.
