From the moment my baby daughter was born, the world seemed an altogether more alarming place, full of dangers I had never noticed before. This was love, I realized, looking at her tiny face, and with it came a swarming cloud of brand-new fears.
The sinuous shadows of the palace remind me of it, but this time, when I emerge, it will be into another world entirely. One I shape myself. One where even a king knows justice.
The world is beyond recognition; the landscape of our life torn up, all of it at once familiar and strange, and I have an odd sense that nothing is really there at all, as though I might reach out my hand and find the solid objects before me dissolve into air.
