My dad and men of his generation from La Porte, Baytown, and Beaumont speak of how many talented Black athletes lived in their communities. No matter how much of that athletic talent and academic potential was cultivated in southern states in the 1950s and 1960s, white supremacy and racism kept those young men (and women, prior to Title IX) from full participation in higher education as athletes or even as students.
