He tsks. “I meant eavesdropping, little doe.” “I’m no doe.” “No?” His head tilts. “Then what are you?”
“If you want a god to worship, ma petite menteuse, no need to look so far.”
He doesn’t speak, but as he moves to walk by me, his hand brushes against mine, our fingers tangling for the smallest moment. And the way it makes my heart stutter out of rhythm should be the biggest warning I’ve ever had.
“Say it again.” “Say what?” she asks. “My name, little doe,” I rasp. “Say my name.”
“I should kill you for making me feel this way.”
“I’d like to draw you,” I rephrase, moving in closer, my fingers dancing across her skin. “Just like this, with your face kissing the stars… I think it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”
“I’m saying you could drive a man insane. Make him raze the world just to see you smile.”
“I’m going to kiss you now,” I tell her. “Why?” she whispers. “Because, ma petite menteuse, the thought of not kissing you makes me want to die.”
“Please what, little doe?”
“Tell me his name,” he croons. “So I can hunt him down and cut him to pieces.”
And the way he stares, as though he’s diving into my soul and seeing every part, makes me feel like I could ask him for the world, and he’d tear it to pieces just to fit it in my hands.
“You’re mine.”
all I feel is power. And I’m desperate for him to fill me with it until I scream. Just like he promised.
“I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. I can’t fucking breathe without thinking of you.”
“Give me a reason,” I say instead. “One good reason why I should let you live.” His eyes flare. “Because I love you.”
“I will torture and maim any person who dares to even think your name,”
“I’ll be your family now, little doe.”
“I’ve only ever wanted one thing in my entire life: the throne. I’ve been plotting and planning for so long, I can’t remember what life was like before. And I’m so close, Sara. So close to victory.” My stomach tightens. “But you…” He licks his lips. “You could burn down the entire kingdom until it’s nothing but charred rubble, and I would crawl over the embers with glee, so long as I could worship at your feet.” My insides quake from the magnitude of his words. “If that’s love, then yes, I love you.” He lifts a shoulder. “I can’t feel anything but loving you.”
“If we don’t move, you probably will. What were you thinking, burning everything like this?” I glance at the Saxum castle, my home for the last twenty-six years and my family’s legacy for the last three centuries, and shrug. “They wouldn’t give you back.”
