The pre–Second World War sizes of the largest diesel engine had more than doubled by the late 1950s—to more than 10 megawatts—as their efficiencies approached 50 percent.[55] Subsequently, the maximum power of these massive multi-cylinder engines rose to 35 megawatts by the late 1960s and to more than 40 megawatts by 1973. Any diesel engines rated above 30 megawatts can power the largest ULCC, and hence the size of these vessels has never been limited by the availability of adequate prime movers.
