He chuckled. “Not foolish at all, dear. Would it help if your first dance was with a friend? I would be delighted to dance with you.” I scarcely dared to breathe, his offer affected me that much. Finally, I said, “Thank you. I believe it would.”
“People will talk.” “Don’t they always?” “We’re not even engaged,” I said. He cocked his head. “Would you like to be?” My arm went slack against his chest in surprise. “What?” His grin widened. “I came back to London with no other intention than to ask for your hand. We can make it a long engagement, so you have time to get accustomed to the idea. Will you have me, my darling?” “You cannot mean it,” I said. “I am so very—” He cast his face heavenward. “Do not, I beg of you, give me another soliloquy on your faults.” “But, Charles?” He ran a hand through my hair. “Yes, my heart?” “Why?”

“Oh, yes. I want to tell you how I couldn’t take my eyes off you the first time I saw you. I want to tell you how sweet you look when you’re focused on a spell. I want to tell you how much I love the way you blush. I want to spend hours and hours telling you everything I like about you.” He pulled a little away and stroked my cheek with the back of his fingers. “I want to fill your head with so many good things about yourself that you turn a little prideful with it all.”
