A place called Nightshade.
he’d managed to keep himself in the forefront of my thoughts with the occasional gifts he’d leave behind for me.
The ironic part being, the poor bastards were already dead.
“Have you learned anything from this, girl?” “Yes, Your Excellency” she said, tipping her chin up. “I learned that I no longer fear the dark.”
“Strong women will always bear the dangerous burden of a weaker man’s pride.”
“Don’t worry, Lustina. Your secret is safe with me.”
“Curmudgeonism. Seems your vocabulary could use a bit of tweaking.” “So could your attitude.”
“At least tell me if I should be frightened to be alone with you.” One slow trek up my body, and his gaze met mine. “Yes. You absolutely should be.”
“Perhaps, like the dogs, I enjoy a chase.” For
“Yes. That is its nature. Between its adorable appearance and it’s alluring song, it makes for the perfect predator.” He ran his thumb across his bottom lip, eyeing me up and down. “In some ways, it reminds me of you.”
He rolled his shoulders back, and his hand curled into a fist. “Who is he?”
He scoffed at that. “I would’ve killed him.” He didn’t bother to look at me, still staring out the window. “Killed him for ditching me?” “No. For asking you in the first place.”

“I would choose an eternity of damnation before ever giving up the opportunity to be buried between your thighs.” I pressed my lips together to hide a coy smile. “As flattering as that may be, it isn’t very ambitious.” “No, it’s not. But I believe in the journey, and the path to ambition is rarely as thrilling as the one which leads to perdition.”
“Just know that I’m always here for you, Master Van Croix. I’m happy to help you any way I can.” “You can ease my headache right now. By leaving. Immediately”
“The Sentinels … they’ll … come. For you. And … punish.” “What else is new?”
Through a haze of tears, I looked down to where, from the center of his chest, the tip of a sword protruded.
“Because even in the afterlife, we are not exempt from wrath’s punishment,”
“You gotta be one crazy dame to fuck with the heavens. Must really love this one.” Swallowing back the threat of tears, I nodded. “I’ve loved him an eternity.”
I’d have damned my soul a thousand times, if it meant your return!”
