They believed that comfort made people complacent. Things dragged on too long because no one negotiated in good faith for the first half of the meeting, sometimes even longer. Why would they when they didn’t feel rushed or uncomfortable? A cushioned seat, drinks, and maybe even snacks only meant each party would play a game to see whose patience wore out first to try and get the upper hand on them.
