A single male among them held my attention. Unlike the others, he didn’t possess a beak, but a very sexy pair of human lips.
“You’ve never broadcast your emotions so strongly, Dakas,” Graith said pensively. “Initially, I was going to tease you for how you had caught the female’s attention, but your reaction gives me pause.” “She has stirred my mating glands,” I said matter-of-factly. “I failed to shield my emotions because I was fighting my soul’s attempts to bond with hers.”
However, it turns out that you, my dear, are the soulmate one of them has been looking for. And here you were, but a short flight away.” “Seriously?” The agent chuckled at my dubious tone and disbelieving expression. “Seriously,” he repeated with a nod. “Like us, Temerns, the Zelconians are empaths. Unlike us, when they meet the one, they soul-bind. It is both a physical and spiritual reaction that can only occur with a single person in the entire universe. The moment you stepped into the room, Dakas felt the call of your soul and spent the meeting fighting the urge to bond with you.”
“Well, I guess there’s no point beating my chest over the inevitable,” I said with a heavy sigh. “At least I know we’re compatible since there was a human-Zelconian hybrid in their Council chamber.” “That hybrid is your soulmate,” Kayog intervened. “He is?!” He nodded with that odd grin made stiff by his beak. “Are you pleased by this news?” I didn’t know how to respond without sounding crass. I squirmed uneasily in my seat while looking for the right words. “To be honest, yes, I am. I guess him being half-human makes him more… relatable?” I said sheepishly. “And you won’t have to worry about

Although their constellation-filled eyes made it difficult to know specifically where a Zelconian was looking, I knew Dakas had locked his gaze on me. I didn’t know what I expected his reaction to be when we met again, but not for him to display this gentle, almost awed expression. I found myself instinctively smiling. His face softened further and a sweet, almost shy smile stretched his very sexy human lips. It was odd that the word ‘shy’ should have entered my mind, as intimidating would better describe this mountain of a male.
“Our respective peoples and the UPO see our union as a beneficial transaction for all parties involved,” I continued. “You are entering into it out of duty to your people. But I am entering it because it will make me whole. You will make me whole.”
“The minute you walked into the Council chamber this morning, you called to me. You are the other half of my soul. The situation with the Yurus and the promises of the UPO play no part in my consenting to this union. With or without this situation, now that I’ve found you, I would have come here to court you,” I said fervently. “Vyrax’s ambitions only rushed the process. But for me, it would have always been you.”
“A few shuttles?” Luana asked, surprised. “Just how much stuff are you sending?” Kayog’s mischievous smile told me we would receive far more than expected. “The right amount,” the Temern replied mysteriously. “I wish you two the very best. Should you need anything, do not hesitate to reach out to me.”
While it required little effort for me to stab one of the spikes solidly into the ground with a single movement, the feeling of awe it elicited in my female made me want to puff out my chest. To my embarrassment, I found myself making a show of it. I enjoyed basking in her admiration.
“You look so delicate, and sometimes appear quite timid,” he said pensively. “And yet, a bold, no-nonsense flame burns just beneath the surface. Your body is fragile, but your mind is not.”
“Of course. Take the time you need. I’ll be busy preening and making myself pretty for you.” Luana laughed, her eyes sparkling in the most enticing fashion. “All right, pretty boy. I will be back soon.”
“Your anatomy is fascinating to the physician in me and has my human side burning with curiosity,” I said matter-of-factly. His face softened and a mischievous smile stretched his lips. “I’m yours, Luana. We can play doctor-patient whenever you want.”
“Do you have any idea how beautiful you are?” Dakas whispered with an intensity that turned me upside down. “I cannot wait to take you home and bond with you, for my soul to be one with yours. Then … then you will truly know my heart and how your mere presence makes me feel.” “I look forward to it,” I whispered back, my chest filled with the most wondrous heat. “But for now, stop trying to tempt me, you seductress. I have distressed villagers to protect and evil to thwart before I can drag you to my lair and have my way with you!” Dakas said teasingly. I laughed. “Apologies, oh valiant hero.

“Your emotions are such a mess right now! I am truly intrigued. What thought crossed your mind?” Dakas asked with undisguised curiosity. Squirming on my feet, I scrunched my face while trying to build the courage to confess. “Well, I don’t really know what Zelconians eat. And, for a second there, I wondered if you’d be offended by me suggesting you eat bird eggs,” I said sheepishly. Dakas’s eyes widened, then he threw his head back and burst out laughing.
“Oh, okay … But you didn’t answer,” I added, narrowing my eyes at him. “I know,” he deadpanned while approaching me. I opened my mouth to argue, but he caught my chin in his hand and crushed my lips with a possessive kiss, silencing me. It was brief, just enough for my toes to begin to curl before he ended it, rubbed his nose against mine, and walked out of the room.
I scoffed. “Not at all! It was beautiful this morning. This hairdo is lovely. I don’t mind if you wear it during the day. But not at night. Please leave it unbound for me. I love it wild, fanning over my chest, and to be able to slip my fingers through it, unimpeded,” I said in a pleading tone. And I can’t wait to see how much wilder it will get after I’ve made love to you.
“You’re dodging,” I said, itching to kick him. “Why won’t you answer?” “Because not knowing is driving you insane, and I find it infinitely entertaining,” he deadpanned.
I was drowning in the ocean of stars that sparkled in his eyes. We didn’t say a single word, and yet a million silent communications passed between us. At the back of my head, I felt a light tingling that I knew to be Dakas’s soul brushing against mine, eager for us to bind.
The agonizing pain vanished, the tingle faded, and a maelstrom of emotions flooded through me: guilt, protectiveness, and possessiveness, all wrapped in a heavy layer of tenderness. Then joy so profound it nearly brought tears to my eyes—Dakas’s joy. And then his voice resonated in my mind. “We are one.”
Before long, I was pounding into my mate, the sound of our flesh meeting buried by our voluptuous moans and shouts of ecstasy. Twice more I spent my seed inside Luana before collapsing next to her, destroyed. I pulled my woman’s slick and trembling body on top of me and closed my wings around her. As we gave in to sleep, I basked in the blissful emotions of my mate.
“These are not edible maggots! You knew what I was thinking!” This time, I gave in and burst out laughing. The way Luana looked around, she was clearly looking for something—hopefully non-lethal—to throw at me.
Luana nodded stiffly. Zatruk gave her that intense look again. This time, I shifted my wings and took half a step forward, drawing his attention to me. It wasn’t like me to mark my territory, but his interest in my mate was rubbing me the wrong way. His smirk further stretched his lips around his large tusks.
Zatruk snorted and gave Luana a slow once over that pissed me off. She lifted her chin defiantly, which only broadened Zatruk’s smile. “I like you, little human,” he said with a hint of amusement in his voice. “You’ll forgive me if I’m unable to reciprocate the sentiment,” Luana said in a glacial tone. Instead of getting offended, Zatruk threw back his head and laughed out loud. His guards also chuckled and looked at my woman with new eyes, an appreciative glimmer sparkling within. “I really do like you, little female. Too bad the pretty bird already claimed you,” Zatruk said nonchalantly,

Okay now I’m intrigued by Zatruk & am wondering if he’ll pop up in a future book with his own mate 👀
A strangled cry escaped me and my arms tightened around his neck when the flapping sound of his wings reached my ears and the cool night wind caressed my burning skin as he soared. Fear and exhilaration warred against the pleasure of my husband’s cock still pumping into me as he flew us through an environment that I could no longer see.
