A single male among them held my attention. Unlike the others, he didn’t possess a beak, but a very sexy pair of human lips.
“She has stirred my mating glands,” I said matter-of-factly. “I failed to shield my emotions because I was fighting my soul’s attempts to bond with hers.”
He seemed to think I’d found myself an alien husband just to deny him what he’d always considered rightfully his.
“Our respective peoples and the UPO see our union as a beneficial transaction for all parties involved,” I continued. “You are entering into it out of duty to your people. But I am entering it because it will make me whole. You will make me whole.”
“The minute you walked into the Council chamber this morning, you called to me. You are the other half of my soul. The situation with the Yurus and the promises of the UPO play no part in my consenting to this union. With or without this situation, now that I’ve found you, I would have come here to court you,” I said fervently. “Vyrax’s ambitions only rushed the process. But for me, it would have always been you.”
“Good,” I said in a soft tone. “My number one duty is ensuring your happiness. After all, I am an empath. Your emotions are my emotions. The more joy I give you, the happier I will be.”
“You look so delicate, and sometimes appear quite timid,” he said pensively. “And yet, a bold, no-nonsense flame burns just beneath the surface. Your body is fragile, but your mind is not.”
“I like you, Luana Torres. If you weren’t Dakas’s soulmate, I might have courted you myself.”
While a victorious roar rose behind me, I silently mouthed two simple words to my husband: thank you. But my heart was shouting that he was my fucking hero.
I could fully fold my foot around an object the same way I could wrap my hand around a cup.
“Do not fear, my mate. I will return to you safely. Trust me.”
What would it be like making love with someone who could feel what I felt? He wouldn’t have to guess if I liked what he was doing.
“Do you have any idea how beautiful you are?” Dakas whispered with an intensity that turned me upside down. “I cannot wait to take you home and bond with you, for my soul to be one with yours. Then … then you will truly know my heart and how your mere presence makes me feel.”
“But for now, stop trying to tempt me, you seductress. I have distressed villagers to protect and evil to thwart before I can drag you to my lair and have my way with you!” Dakas said teasingly.
“No,” Dakas said in a tone that brooked no argument. “Human food shall be eaten the human way. Teach me, my mate. How do I use these?”
my short lists of pet peeves, which included people chewing with their mouths open or being loud eaters. The worst were those who felt the need to create their own soundtrack by moaning, nom-noming, or smacking their lips while they ate. Just thinking about it made me twitch.
I totally agree.
“Now, stop emitting such annoyed emotions over past grievances and finish teaching me how to use these before this food gets tired of being neglected and walks out on its own,” Dakas taunted.
He gave me a strange look and chuckled. “Luana, I have absolutely no problem with your germs. After all, I had my tongue in your mouth barely half an hour ago.”
“Don’t Tilda me. You knew I would ask you about it. Come on, spill! What is he packing? Is he well hung? Does it have a weird shape? Ridges? Feelers? Oh, my God! Does he have two peens? I read about some alien species that has two peens. And then there’s this other one that opens up like a flower.” She suddenly paled and eyed me with horror. “Fuck … he’s like a duck, isn’t he? He’s got that crazy spiraling peen that shoots out like a spring, doesn’t he?”
“Pfft, you’re the first human friend I know who’s banged a truly alien-looking alien. I need deets.
“Sheesh, talk about boring. You have a hot alien in your bed, to whom you’re legally married, and you didn’t jump his bone? We need to talk about your priorities,” Tilda said with pretend disgust.
“Don’t think that gets you off the hook, missy!” Tilda said, wagging a menacing finger at me. “Once you jump your alien’s bone, I will expect a full report. Call it medical research.”
Right now, I just wanted to feel the warm softness of her body against mine while we still had the house all to ourselves.
As much as the colony balked at technology, you couldn’t bitch about something that would literally save your life, especially when you could no longer be certain how available your resident doctor would be, going forward.
He looked like a mythical being in the dreamy glow of the crystals lighting the room, his midnight-blue wings draped beside and behind him like a long, regal cape.
“We’re going to have to get you a jetpack,” Dakas said pensively. My eyes widened. “Whatever for?” “To give you even a chance to catch our brats when they try to flee their chores or homework,” he deadpanned.
“Dakas will not die. Not today. Not anytime soon. Reach out to your mate,” he ordered in a tone that brooked no argument. “Call out to his soul and hold him. He will seek you.”
“Finding you was the happiest day of his life. Bring him back to us, Luana.”
“Oh, my love. It’s okay. I’m here,” I whispered, caressing her hair. That opened the floodgates. She clung to me, sobbing and apologizing between more choked sobs. “I could feel your pain. I felt you say goodbye. When they said you’d gone over the wall, I thought I was going to lose you,” Luana said against my neck.
This was but the first of many useful technological tools that became the norm. The wind of change was blowing over the colony. The younger generations were finally speaking out and demanding to have a louder voice in the direction of the colony and its future—their future. I didn’t envy my father having to juggle with everyone’s temper and sensitivities, but draining that abscess was long overdue.
I would never get over the sight of big, muscular, badass-looking males cooing like doves.
“You do look like a plucked chicken,” I said with a shrug, causing him to recoil in surprise. “But you’re my plucked chicken, and you’re not allowed to be embarrassed because of your appearance.
