When I met him, I was a doe-eyed seventeen-year-old virgin. He was a twenty-three-year-old tattoo-covered criminal who did what he had to, to survive. We came from two different sides of town, two different worlds, two different paths. But those paths became one, and although our histories were different, our futures were the same.
Rule #4: Keep your friends close, and your husband’s best friend even closer.
I love Hunter and Isabel, but their happy little married life is not for me. Sleeping with the same person every night and waking up with the same person every morning. The monotony of it sounds so draining.
“Maybe the reason my marriage is so sacred to you is because you’ve always been a part of it. And maybe what I’m asking you isn’t so crazy, after all.”
We’re in a small room, but I don’t have a chance to get my bearings when he drops me on a counter and wraps his hand around my throat, pulling me toward him to kiss me hard on the mouth.
“Spread your legs for him, baby,” I whisper. “Let him see how beautiful you are.”
“I’m ready, Sir,” he says in a teasing tone, and I bite back a laugh. “Knock it off,” I snap.
“You can be rough with her,” Hunter says from his place across the room. “She likes it.”
Everyone thought I was so knowledgeable and astute because of my countless trips to the library and second-hand bookstores, but only the librarian knew the truth. Oh, I was knowledgeable all right. Knowledgeable in the many eclectic terms used to describe an erect penis.
The hand on the back of my neck slides to the front, holding me by the throat as he presses me against the wall again.
Finally, I pull away, and he lets me. As I’m leaving the kitchen, feeling as if my body is heavier and slower than it was when I came down here, he says my name, so I stop and turn toward him. “You know you’ve always been my girl, right?” I bite back my emotions. Calmly, I nod. “And no matter what, you’ll always be my girl.” Tears prick my eyes and I force a smile. “Good night, Drake.” “Good night, Isabel.”
