Henry Ossawa Tanner was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on June 21, 1859. He was the first of nine children born to Reverend Benjamin Tucker Tanner, a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and Sarah Elizabeth Miller Tanner, a former slave and granddaughter of a White plantation owner, who had escaped through the Underground Railroad.
