“My birthday will be October tenth—Columbus Day.” What could be more appropriate than a day commemorating the discovery of a land and people who were already there and didn’t need discovering? “I will be eighteen on the tenth of October.”

There’s a theater on the next street playing a revival of Cats, which mankind will likely have to suffer through for the rest of eternity.

“Cowards hide!” says Connor. “But warriors lie in wait,” Elina says. “The only difference is whether you’re motivated by fear or purpose.”

“No true hero ever believes that they are one,” she tells him. “So you go ahead, Lev, and keep denying it with every fiber of your being.”

I suppose if the hurt ever comes back, I’ll deal with it, but I won’t go looking for it.”

Hayden’s the kind of guy who gets in your head, but only goes there to amuse himself.

Hayden has no desire to be a hero. He just wants to survive and spread some of that survival around.

“Throw a stone in a river, and it just sinks to the bottom,” Elina tells him, “Put a boulder in its path and the river just flows around. What happens will happen, no matter what you do.”
