“My wealth is vast, but it is also several centuries in the making,” Laura says as she steers the car towards the street. “I consider it reparations for having to witness mankind for this long.”
“Let’s say you’re a vampire,” I begin, struggling to steer my mind away from the overwhelming urge to stop dead in the middle of the street and kiss her. “No, no—let us not say this,” Laura says, shaking her head delicately. “I am the vampire. The master from which all others have been copied.”
Once upon a time, I drank the blood of humans upon whom I had intentionally inflected tremendous pain,” she says. “It took me much dissatisfaction to realize that the taste of the blood directly correlates to the contents of the heart. Pain dilutes the flavor, but love is…” She inhales deeply, smiling serenely. “Love is deluxe. As a human, you might compare it to braising, or searing, or sautéing.”
“I’m not ashamed,” I say, throat still thick from crying. “I just wish I could go one day without having an allergic reaction to being alive. I’m not ashamed,” I repeat, more to myself. “I’m tired.”
I’m an appetite incarnate, and all I care about is getting my fill.
“And I would give you my heart if I could reach it.”
“The thing is, my sister is older than the concept of color, ergo the only color she really sees is red. I have no intentions whatsoever of letting a white person into the family portrait.”
“Talon?” She pauses with her hand on the doorknob and turns, smiling expectantly. “Oasis?” “What would you have done if I was white?” I ask. “I would’ve killed you.”
“I’m not dealing with a white bitch forever.” “I’ll be sure to stay Black.”
“I have endless capacity for your secrets.”
“You steal from museums?” “I steal from thieves,” he says.
“I will show you darknesses like no other. I will paint every corner of your mind the color of fear until you wish you had never been given form.”
“If you are fired, then the one responsible will be the Job to my God,” he says.
