It’s startling that Bonhoeffer put it that way in 1928, sixteen years before he famously wrote to Eberhard Bethge about “religionless Christianity” in those letters that Bethge buried in the Schleichers’ backyard in a gas-mask canister. But it’s more startling that those exhumed ruminations have sometimes been described as marking a profound and new turn in his theology.
