In one of those moments for which the word Schadenfreude seems to have been invented, the supremely wicked Freisler was brained by a ceiling beam and dispatched to another bar of justice altogether, one with which he seemed to have been less well acquainted. As a result of Freisler’s unscheduled appearance in that other court, Schlabrendorff’s exit from this world was delayed by decades.* But things that day would get stranger still.
