So now, with Bonhoeffer back in Berlin, they resumed their argument. Hildebrandt became Bonhoeffer’s best friend, his first close friend outside the family. In a few years Hildebrandt would also become Bonhoeffer’s closest ally in the church struggle. Hildebrandt was three years Bonhoeffer’s junior and, like Bonhoeffer, had grown up in the Grunewald district of Berlin.
