He then took up an extra collection explicitly for the work of the Confessing Church. He instructed that the money be placed on the Lord’s Table at the altar, where it was dedicated to God and God’s work with a prayer. The Gestapo usually turned a blind eye to such breaches of the laws, but that day the officer did not. At the end of the service he brazenly went forward and took the money.
