That winter while Dietrich9 was living with his grandmother, they discussed the idea of his visiting Gandhi in India. His grandmother encouraged it. What her interest in Gandhi was we cannot know for sure. During the previous century, she was active in the budding field of women’s rights: she built a home for elderly women and founded a domestic school for girls in Stuttgart. For her efforts she was awarded a medal of the Order of Olga, presented to her by the queen of Württemberg.
