While dean of Canterbury, Bell had invited Dorothy Sayers and Christopher Fry as guest artists, but his most important invitation would be in 1935, when he commissioned T. S. Eliot to write the play Murder in the Cathedral, which dramatized the murder of Thomas à Becket that had taken place there in 1170.
