“You made it stop,” she murmured again. She reached a hand up and tentatively touched his lips. Frost coated her fingertips, and the cold against his skin sent a chill down his spine. A half grin kicked up on his mouth, and he huffed a breath onto them, breathing out his magic. The frost melted instantly.
“I know that mortals fear the Fae, yes.” Nuri smirked. “That’s cute. Fear the Fae.
“You are fierce and strong and a survivor. You need no one, Scarlett Monrhoe, but wouldn’t it be nice to have someone there with you so you can rest and take a breath, even if only for a minute?”
“Everything’s about to change, isn’t it?” “Yes, Seastar, nothing will be the same again.”
“I am the Crown Prince,” he replied, his voice thick. “I do not need to do anything.” Indeed.
“Because sometimes we just need someone to sit with us in the darkness in the middle of the mess,” Sorin replied.
“You are not all darkness,” Sorin said softly. “Sometimes I do not think that is true,” she answered,
“Darkness is not a bad thing, Scarlett, but do not let it overtake the stars.”
“No matter what you see tonight, no matter who I am, promise me you’ll…,” she swallowed, her eyes closing. “I will find the light, Scarlett,” he said softly.
tall, muscled general of lethal grace and mask of stone.
“I can do more than that,” he crooned with a smirk, his gaze dipping to her mouth. “Stop that,” she snapped, smacking his shoulder. He gave a quiet chuckle. “I’m glad you find this funny.
“You would stay in the dark?” Callan challenged. “I would stay where I can see the stars,” she replied. And Sorin could have sworn that thing that stirred within his soul sat up at her words.
here, with him, she could simply be. She could breathe. Because he understood her. Understood her darkness.
Scarlett. She jerked her head up. He had said her name, but he hadn’t. His lips hadn’t moved.
She had left. She had left without a fight. No sarcasm. None of her damn attitude. Her insufferable arrogance had been nonexistent. It was as if she had already conceded, already admitted defeat.
It is a game we play, he and I. He would be damned if Mikale won.
Tears streamed down her cheeks. Alone. She was completely alone. Locked in a room. Locked in a cage. The tears kept coming.
If you go to him, the stars will go out. And they did. The last star, the last light in the shadows, went out.
Cassius's later words now swirled in her mind. You know he will not leave you behind, right? That he will come for you.
She had needed more time, and instead she had lost it all. She had made a bad call. She had played a dangerous game, and she had lost.
“If you mean do I understand I am going into hiding, yes,” Callan answered grimly.
“Scarlett Monrhoe, I would cross deserts and oceans for you. I would cross the realms for you. Did you really think a mortal man could keep you from me?”
“No. Scarlett here just informed me I am not allowed to touch her unless she asks me to.” “Oh, for fuck’s sake,” Scarlett moaned. She heard Finn and Sloan snicker behind them. “Language, Lady,” Sorin chided mockingly. “I swear to Saylah, if you call me Lady one more time, I am going to touch you right off this horse.”
“I want to tell you a story,” he said after an hour or so, and he pressed a piece of bread into her hand. She smiled as she took a small bite.
The shadows that encircled her curled around his arms and ears, and they looked different, she realized. These shadows were embracing him, loving him, caressing him.
