He had thought she would have broken by now. He thought wrong.
“Because where I am from, females fight alongside males on the battlefields. Because those men in your king’s armies are not more skilled than you are. You could likely best many of them outside of the elite group that I train. Because you deserve the choice of something else if that is what you desire.”
“I know you will be just fine alone, Scarlett Monrhoe. You are strong and wicked and brilliant.” Scarlett felt heat rush to her face, but he wouldn’t release her chin. He held her gaze and continued, “But maybe, just maybe, alone is not where you are supposed to be either.”
Before him stood a Lady of Darkness and beside her was her twin.
“Deadly I am?” she suggested. “You forgot how utterly lethal I am and yet you let me stand before you, in your private quarters, with your dagger forgotten on the floor by your bed.”
“I forgot how, even with everything I want to yell at you and demand from you, how even with all of that running through my mind, I would let you kill me, just to run my fingers through your hair one more time.”
“Tell me what you need from me, my Wraith.”
I have never found anyone I have loved enough to marry or to believe I had found my twin flame.”
“You are fierce and strong and a survivor. You need no one, Scarlett Monrhoe, but wouldn’t it be nice to have someone there with you so you can rest and take a breath, even if only for a minute?”
“It is not that I do not trust you, Sorin,” Scarlett said after a beat of silence. “It is that I have done some atrocious things, so much worse than allowing a prince to fall in love with me. And I fear… I fear how you will look at me when you hear that story.”
“Poor Princeling, having two people making sure he is safe at all times,”
“Darkness is not a bad thing, Scarlett, but do not let it overtake the stars.”
“No matter what you see tonight, no matter who I am, promise me you’ll…,” she swallowed, her eyes closing. “I will find the light, Scarlett,” he said softly.
I still see the stars.
“You are not alone in the darkness. Remember that,”
This thing you and I have was doomed from the start, Callan, you had to have known that. That throne is still a cage. You are still light, while I am still dark.”
“My dear Prince, do not forget that I am Death’s Maiden.” Finn and Sloan swore viciously at the revelation. “Much of what made me what I am today was forged in darkness, and it is a darkness I do not entirely wish to leave.” “You would stay in the dark?” Callan challenged. “I would stay where I can see the stars,” she replied. And Sorin could have sworn that thing that stirred within his soul sat up at her words.
As sleep finally claimed him, he let himself acknowledge something else he’d been pushing away. Something he’d refused to even entertain these last few months, not thinking it was a possibility. He let an old prophecy come to his mind made by an Oracle a few years prior. It was one he had thought he had run from but had ended up running right into.
Just a calmness, a steadiness that she hadn’t known she’d been searching for.
Scarlett. She jerked her head up. He had said her name, but he hadn’t. His lips hadn’t moved.
“A prince holds her heart.”
“Scarlett Monrhoe, I would cross deserts and oceans for you. I would cross the realms for you. Did you really think a mortal man could keep you from me?”
“You are my necessity.”
“I don’t hate you.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I know, Love, but you will.”
“Look at that. Some emotion,” he said softly, stroking her cheek. “Here’s an emotion for you, Prince of Fire. I hate you. Every broken and shredded piece of me hates your very existence.” There was no affection in her tone. No brief glimpse of tenderness or teasing. “I know,” he replied. “I know you do, but I will still come for you. I will still fight my way into your darkness to help you find the stars, and when you see them again, I will hold true to my word. I will help you kill the Fire Prince if that is what you desire.”
