Arguably the most handsome man on earth with his disheveled blond hair, pale gray-green eyes and devilish grin that made panties combust. Leo Winter. Former motorcycle club member. Current playboy.
He was the older, unattainable bad boy all the girls wanted to tame. A legend. A legend who was quite clear that he didn’t touch girls. Oh, but he’d had his share of women. That reputation I was sure he’d earned.
Tonight, I wasn’t the geek. I wasn’t the good girl who loved old books and early bedtimes. I wasn’t the girl who did everything that everyone expected her to do. Tonight, I was a sexy woman who saw the fantasy within her reach and stretched for it.
I’d asked him for a moment and without any fanfare, I’d told him I was pregnant. He’d called me a fucking liar.
Leo had basically called me a whore. I’d definitely called him a bastard.
“A paternity test.” His jaw ticked. “I want one.” Presley opened her mouth, but I held up a hand. As much as I appreciated her standing up for me, this was my battle to fight. “I’ll give you a paternity test. Anything else?” He shook his head. “When I prove you’re a liar, you’ll be out of my life. And Pres, you know the reason she’s lying? Because I always wrap it up. Always.”
“What do you want from me?” he asked. “Nothing.” This wasn’t a trap. I wasn’t out to steal his freedom or money or whatever it was he was so desperately trying to protect. “Good. Because nothing is all you’re going to get.”
Leo was temptation personified, rugged sex appeal entangled with the thrill of the forbidden. He was the flame I’d known would burn but I’d touched it anyway.
“You should finish school,” he said, clearing his throat. “Do your next semester. Leave Clifton Forge.” I inched away. “You want me to leave?” “Yeah, I do.” He might as well have punched me in the stomach. “Look, Cass, I’ve got nothing for you. For this kid. I was looking for a good time, not a commitment or responsibility.”
“It’s late,” Mom said. “I wonder who it is.” I shrugged. “Maybe a neighbor?” “What the hell do you think you’re doing here, you motherfucker?” Dad’s voice bellowed through the house. Mom’s eyes went wide. My heart stopped. Not a neighbor. We both knew who the motherfucker was. “Oh, shit.”
“Didn’t expect your dad to hit me.” “He loves me. And you deserved it.”
Cass was the most alluring, captivating woman I’d ever met. It was the reason I’d sat beside her at the bar. One glance at that hair and those eyes and I’d been entranced, addicted and desperate for a touch.
“Leo.” I turned. “Yeah?” “If you hurt me or my daughter, I will cut you out of our lives faster than you can blink.” There was the guardian. There was the fire. “Fair enough.” I dipped my chin. “Good night, Firecracker.”
“And he calls you Buttercup.” “That or Cassie. My friends called me Cass, but Mom and Dad have always called me Cassie.” “What about Cassandra? Anyone call you that?” “Professors. Dad when I’m in trouble.”
Handsome men with little kids were mesmerizing.
“I hate feeling stupid. More than anything. Being at your house while you’re out with other women . . . I feel like a fool. I feel pathetic. I can’t be at your home while you’re out all night with—” “A bunch of guys.” “Huh?”
It was easier now, touching her. I’d even felt the baby kick a few nights ago and if Cass had been awake, she would have seen me have a moment of amazement followed by one of sheer panic.
