Most people would look at Scarlett Marks and think she was broken. Maybe there were a few cracked and scraped pieces, but this woman was not broken. She was lost. Tired. Alone. But not broken.
“Are you a good man?” Luke stared down at me, his dark blue eyes unwavering. “If you don’t know the answer to that already, I guess I’ve got some work to do.”
“Please don’t leave.” I narrowed my gaze. Never in my life had someone included please when reciting rules. What was the catch? “Okay,” I drawled.
Her chair. Even after she left here, that would be her chair.
The woman was turning my world inside out. And I really didn’t mind.
Scarlett could undo me with those blue eyes.
“I don’t want another woman.”
“The only woman I want is you.”
“Luke.” I poked him in the side. “Tell me.” “Do you trust me?” “Yes.” The word came without hesitation.
We live in a gray world and you’ve got to pick the shade closest to white. So do what your heart tells you.”
There’s justice for Scarlett. And it outweighed the injustice. A million times over, this was right.
“I’ve never been in love. What’s it like?”
We hadn’t gotten pregnant on a rainy day—maybe next time, if we were so blessed. This house needed babies.
I liked to think we’d made this baby on the river.
