Humans were stupid. It was why the parasites could easily overrun them if left unchecked.
He would come through, but not until all this chaos had died down. Ryckes created their own chaos. They did not enjoy that of others.
Danny was turning me into a lazy nask. Those fat, ugly little creatures slept for decades at a time in my world, waking only to eat whatever was closest and find another nask to engage in the least enthusiastic mating dance I’d ever seen.
and my sweet human was currently humming to himself while he rifled through the nightstand as I watched. It helped that he was wearing nothing but tight grey boxer briefs.
Not that I was old. Or at least, I wasn’t particularly old in terms of my species. I was more like… middle-aged.
I tried not to think about it often. Because once I started, some foreign emotion like panic began to fill up every inch of me, and I struggled to push it back down.
Sometimes I looked at him and was flooded with dread when I thought of the day that I would start seeing the black cloak of death creeping into the edges of his aura, getting closer every minute.
I was used to being alone, but this would be different. This would ruin me. I already knew it.
My chest ached at the bump on his nose that made it slightly crooked. I often kissed that bump, because it made Danny smile up at me with such love.
“I love you too, Soul Eater.”
They really hadn’t learned their lessons from the Nebraska incident. Honestly, they were lucky I wasn’t quite as murderous as they all thought.
“You think I can’t feel you looking at me?” “Well, why can’t I look at you?”
Danny called it my BDE pose. I had no idea what that meant, but it normally succeeded in making him come and give me some attention. It worked.
“You can look at me all you want.”
“If you… If we could be together for longer, would you… want that?” I asked him, wanting to grit my teeth when my voice came out edged with uncertainty. I still had no idea why Danny loved me.
“A way to extend your life. Would you want that?” Danny stared at me, jaw slack. “Extend my life?” he echoed, unsure. “Do you mean like, by a few years? A decade?” I shook my head. “Thousands.” Danny made a choked sound.
“There’s a place in my world where we can… tether our lives. It means that the years we each have left become ours. Both of ours. We share them.”
“Our life forces become intertwined. They rely on one another.”
“This would mean that I would give half of that time to you. And you would give half of yours to me.”
“I’m afraid not, sweet. You’d still essentially be human, just… more indestructible.” Danny’s cheeks flushed pink. “Sorry, stupid question.”
He leaned forward to press a kiss to my mouth. “Wyn, you romantic son of a bitch.” I rolled my eyes. “Focus, my sweet.”
“But if you don’t want… If you just want to live your normal human life, I swear I will protect you for all of it. And I will treasure every moment I get to spend with you.” He watched me for a long moment. “But then, when I die, you’d be alone again.”
“Trust me, Danny, I am not getting the raw end of the deal.” I wrapped my arms tight around his middle, pulling him closer. “I get you.” “Oh my god, Wyn, you’re being so romantic today.”
I was addicted to the pleasure-dazed look I could put on his face.
“You mean you’ve never seduced anyone else with your sexy voice and insane skills in the sack?” He dropped another kiss on my chin.
I rolled my eyes. “I think you are the only being alive who would ever consider my voice anything other than hideous.”
“I will agree about the skills, though.” I dipped my head to his neck, nuzzling him. “If we’re measuring by how loud I can make you get.”
“Shall I see how loud I can make you get now, my sweet human?”
I wasn’t sure he would appreciate me just killing them all so the path was clear. Maybe I’d gently suggest it when we were closer.
A reason why the very essence of me had strained for him, desperately reaching out the moment I had seen his face for the first time. I had imprinted on him without conscious thought in that moment, my blood pounding for him.
He was mine. He was always supposed to be mine. I had just needed to wait for a long time to find him. But the wait had been worth it.
“Stay here, sweet. I won’t be long.” “Be safe,” Danny told me, like he always did—needlessly. But it still made pleasure curl through my insides every time.
“You’re—you’re not going to suck out my soul?” My lip curled with revulsion. “I can’t think of a single thing I want to do less, human.”
“My sweet, it really would be a lot simpler if—” “Wyn.”
“I could gently deposit them all far away,” I amended. “But it would take a while. There are a lot of them down there, and I would only be able to carry… maybe four or five at once. Any more than that is cumbersome. Humans flail a lot.”
“My sweet human. You know I love you, yes?” Danny looked uncertain—and a little suspicious. “Um, yes. I love y—” “But you were a terrible soldier,” I cut in, trying to keep my voice gentle.
“If it looks like you are in any danger whatsoever, I’m murdering them.”
A pointless waste of life, but humans had always been strangely cavalier about the lives of others, while remaining terrified of death themselves.
“That’s real sweet of you, baby, but I’m not sure it’s still goin’ to work after you dropped it like that.”
“Danny.” I handed him his backpack. “My sweet. I can only do so much.”
“You know if I tell anyone all the sweet shit you say to me, no one’s gonna be scared of you anymore.”
He was worse than Edin, because he didn’t even try to embarrass me on purpose.
He’s my…” I struggled to think of the word. “My partner. He’s mine.” “Your partner?” Orlith straightened. “Your lover? You have a human lover?”
“Okay, maybe we can tone down the horrified shock in our voices,” Danny grumbled, looking between me and Orlith with a frown.
“Your human pet is very pretty.”
“Would you be willing to let me—” “I will rip your tongue out with my bare hands if you finish that sentence,” I seethed, tugging Danny back a step so I was partially in front of him.
“Human, I find myself strangely interested in you. If you ever get sick of Wyn and his foul moods, come and find me.” Danny spluttered in disbelief. “I won’t, but… thanks?”
He soaked up the world like a sponge. It was endearing. But also mildly infuriating when we had somewhere to be. “My sweet, I can show you everything in explicit detail after we’ve been to the Caen an Sin,”
It made me forever grateful that he wanted to be with me, because the thought of him falling prey to anyone who would take advantage of his gentle nature made me want to murder things. All the things.
I would never betray his trust. My entire being rebelled at the very idea of it.
