“I can’t believe you’ve watched our side,” I said. “I don’t watch your side, I watch you,” he pointed out.
“You’re like art,” he said when I reached him. “What?” I asked, laughing at the notion. “Yeah, it’s like you’re so seamless. There’s no stop and start like hockey, it’s just one beautiful, ever-moving painting,” he said with admiration in his voice.
Through the entire marriage I had become an isolated glacier, melting away where no one could see.
“And a sport does not define that, Jules, it doesn’t define who you are.” I understood what she was explaining. It was something a lot of athletes struggled with… like what do you do and who are you when you’re done? I promised myself right then to be there for her and not let her lose herself.
The next few years would be tough, but we’d make it. She was the only girl for me in this world. She was my center, my home.
The word beautiful was meant for her. But I didn’t want to say it and scare her away.
“My heart has always been yours, Greyson. For a while I didn’t know if I was afraid to love someone else or if I just gave you all I had,” I told him. “But I think once you love someone so fully, the way I loved you, you can’t just stop loving or turn it off. It doesn’t just go away. I think everyone you love forever carries a little of your love with them. And I didn’t hold back with you. I gave you my whole heart. There was never anything left for anyone else.” I paused; I didn’t want to say what I was thinking then.
“Why are you here, Coach?” he asked curiously. Grey cut his eyes over to me. “Can I let you in on a secret?” he asked Canyon while still keeping eye contact with me. I gave him a warning look and shook my head. Canyon nodded at him. “I love your mom. I am completely and absolutely in love with Julianna Louise Hurley and I have been since I was 16,” he told him matter of factly.
“Max… he’s the one who caused it all. He gave her that phone. He sent her those breakup texts. I’m sure of it.”
“Juju Louise, I’ve been wanting to do this for over a decade,” the truth of those words almost choked me up. “We didn’t get it right in our Gametime. But I think we were able to get it right in our Overtime. If we’re together, we’ve really won, baby. Marry me?”
