“Because I want to hold your hand,” he said with a confident look on his face. “And maybe kiss you,” he wagged his eyebrows at me. “And I’ve wanted to ask you out for a long time,” he smiled.
When I got to the rink the next day, my skates were waiting in the locker room with a note scrawled in crappy boy handwriting: “I had a really great time Juju. Wanna grab donuts with me and the boys after practice today? They wanna meet my girl. And don’t worry about the damn bus. I’ll be giving you a ride.”
Seeing her with a husband would possibly make me mentally and physically ill. Just thinking about it brought bile to my throat. How could it not? For years I had thought- no, was sure- that I’d be her husband.
Through the entire marriage I had become an isolated glacier, melting away where no one could see.
I smiled to myself. Fuck yeah, I’m wifed up. I’d been wifed up for a while. And they were all jealous.
“Mom’s not upset about it,” Canyon said quickly. I looked down at him and he looked a little nervous, like he knew she wouldn’t want him talking about this. He glanced back at the house. “I don’t think they loved each other. They never said it, ya know? They only say I love you to me. I don’t want them to live together ever again,” he said as firmly as he could. I had to steady my breathing. Their home life must have been worse than what I was thinking - when even an eight-year-old wanted him away from her.
“Right!” Canyon said. He laid a little hand on Grey’s muscular shoulder and cocked his head to the side, “So Coach, what was it like playing for the Caps? Me and mom watched a ton of your games, but the Caps were our favorites. We think you played best there. We went once!”
“I still love you,” he choked out. Tears were in the corner of his eyes. In all the years that we were together, I’d never seen him cry before. “I never stopped. I don’t even care if that’s not how you feel, I want you to know Julianna.” It was my turn to tear up. “My heart has always been yours, Greyson.
“I love your mom. I am completely and absolutely in love with Julianna Louise Hurley and I have been since I was 16,” he told him matter of factly. I felt like the breath was punched out of me. I couldn’t believe he just told him that.
