If the architecture of your space doesn’t give you symmetry, you can create your own. By placing pairs of similar objects, such as chairs or potted plants, on either side of a line that you define, you can make an axis of symmetry where none exists. This axis can be measured from the center of a wall or prominent architectural feature, such as a fireplace mantel or built-in bookcase.
