In a 2013 study at the University of Liverpool, psychologists discovered that people unconsciously associate symmetrical forms with positive words like “pleasure,” “paradise,” and “heaven,” and asymmetrical or random forms with words like “disaster,” “evil,” and “death.” Another recent study found that symmetry literally puts a smile on our faces. Looking at symmetrical compositions stimulates a slight contraction of the zygomaticus major, one of the main facial muscles involved in smiling.
