“Your wife is having an affair with my husband,” Ramona said.
The two of them, Cassida and Gabriel, thought they could simply take everything she’d worked for. They thought she would roll over. Ramona laughed. It sounded like a promise of murder. “We’ll catch them,” Matias said, his voice cold like the space between the stars. “I give you my word.”
“It is what it is. Have you been able to stabilize the field?” “Yes,” they said at the same time. “I hate you both.”
Go forth, brave heroes, track down the traitors, and recover your data so you can pay me. I wouldn’t recover the spouses, however. Seems like a lost cause.”
It’s as if a totalitarian regime and a military meritocracy had a baby and dressed it in republican clothes.”
He also understood that he had to draft an immediate divorce agreement. If he were ever to find this again, it wouldn’t be with Cassida, and now having experienced it, he wouldn’t settle.
He gave her a sharp look. “You’re a spider. You sit in the middle of your beautifully woven web and pull the right strings until your prize lands in front of you.” Beautifully woven, even. She wiggled her fingers at him. “Fear my spider legs, Baena.”
Being kind to people and paying attention shouldn’t be done with the expectation of repayment. I helped them because I could, and it made me happy.”
“Cassida gifted you a lovely vintage Second Wave toaster for your collection,” Matias said. What? Ramona turned to him. “You hacked them through a malignant toaster?” “Yes.” She laughed.
She wondered what it would be like to kiss him. What would his eyes look like when she touched his lips? If she melted that ice and let out the fire, how hot would it burn?
only he’d been loyal. If only he’d cared for her. She was starved for affection. She had pushed herself so hard trying to get the seco generators to production, and now she was running on fumes. What she needed most was a partner she could rely on. Instead, she had Gabriel.
She could get up, cross the distance, and kiss him. It would be worth it just for the look on his face. But if she did that, she wouldn’t stop. He wouldn’t stop. They would have each other here, in this holy temple, with only flowers and trees as their witnesses. Nobody would ever know. But they could never do it again.
“You said it would be too much trouble.” Ramona’s voice was soft and wistful. “I would go through a lot more trouble to catch you. You have no idea how rare you are, Matias. A man who is competent, smart, considerate, loyal . . . a man who blocks a sonic blast so you can escape and throws his arm to shield you during a crash. What woman wouldn’t want you, Matias?”
“You were supposed to die. Why aren’t you dead?” He nodded at the plaza below painted red with blood. “Because I killed everyone.”
