“Keep having…Faythe.”
Getting out of his hold was the last thing on her mind, and the threat of steel was insignificant.
“Did you bring any money?” Faythe asked with a childish grin. Reylan relaxed at her enthusiasm and gave a short nod.
She didn’t know exactly when the general would return. It had only been a couple of days, but she missed him.
“Don’t hide from me,” she pleaded quietly. “Don’t put up those walls.”
“Maybe it makes me selfish, but I can’t. I can’t stay away from you. I came back sooner than I usually would from Fenher because while I fear to no end that I might be incapable of protecting you, I can’t stand the thought of your safety being in the hands of anyone else.”
With Reylan here, her mind relented, just enough for her to remember there was a light in the darkness that embraced her. There was a light in him.
Reylan’s voice… It felt like home.
He laid her down gently and moved to step away completely and leave her rooms. A soft hand encased his wrist. “Stay,” Faythe said in a sleepy whisper.
As though the beat of her heart were tied to his own. Yet he didn’t fear it. Not in the slightest.
He straightened his head, black eyes twinkling with a thrill at the challenge. “Have I ever told you your confidence is wickedly attractive?
“Which of them hurt you?”
Though Reylan does tend to go off on tangents sometimes… You’re someone I think he could talk about for centuries if nobody stopped him,” Livia teased, and Faythe’s face grew hotter.
“To have Faythe: to live like death is a game, love is a prize, and danger is desire.”
“Just like old times,” she responded. His grin was enticing. “I have missed this.” “Getting your ass handed to you?” “Watching you”—his eyes trailed her from head to toe—“become beautifully untamed.”
Above everything, I was relieved. So gods-damned relieved you had come to High Farrow. To me.”
“You are not a distraction, Faythe. You are everything.”
“I don’t know what the future holds or where the path may end, but I plan to follow you down whatever perilous, reckless, adventurous road you lead, Faythe Ashfyre.” His lips curled in tender amusement. “I vow to stand by your side. I vow to protect you with my sword and my life. And I vow to bind my fate to yours, if you will have me. I’ve lived enough years in this world to know should you leave it, so too shall my desire to stay here without you.”
His smile—warm, genuine, and heartbreakingly rare—had become the light in her eternal shadow. “Maybe even longer, Faythe Ashfyre.”
sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. Watch the world burn and then rise from the ashes.”
choose you, Faythe. I will always choose you. And I will always hope, as selfish as it may be, that you will choose me too.”
He was wicked, evil, and brilliant. Her enemy…but her equal.
“You are so perfect, Faythe,” he groaned against her skin. “You have no idea how long I’ve waited for you.”
“This kingdom will burn before you claim it.” “Then it’s a shame you won’t bear witness,” Faythe said calmly, “when I sit upon a throne from the ashes.”
“In Ungardia’s darkest hour, when all shall burn and fall, only the Phoenix Queen can find a throne from the ashes, and rise it true for all.”
“Because you are my biggest weakness,” he began in barely more than a whisper. Faythe blinked, stunned. “But you are also my greatest strength, Faythe. I lost everything once before, and I thought that was as close to dying painfully every day as a living person could come.”
“You brought me back,” she whispered. “You always bring me back.” Reylan shook his head. “No, Faythe.” Both his palms held her face. “You brought me back.”
What I can promise…is me. Until the last tomorrow comes. I want you to know every broken piece of me belongs to you.”
“I was going to say I love you…” She took a short pause. Pain swelled in her chest, stealing her breath. “But it’s not enough. Not for what I feel for you.”
She wanted to live—for him, and for the future they could have.
“That we remember, no matter what, to always have Faythe.” He turned to her with a beaming grin and shot a playful wink. It lifted her skittish mood, and she shook her head with a loose laugh. “To live as if death is a game,” Kyleer joined in lightheartedly. “Love is a prize,” Livia continued. “And danger is desire,” Izaiah finished.
“My last breath would be yours,” she heard his truth. “To make sure you knew…I will always find you.”
“I think you won’t kill me because if you do, all hope of finding that light dies with me.”
“Reylan,” Faythe choked, the pain on the warrior’s face striking far deeper than the battle of power within her. “Always remember…you are my heart.” Her eyes burned. “Please forgive me.”
“I’m sorry.” “Don’t,” Reylan begged. “Don’t say that like goodbye.” “I’m not saying goodbye…” Gods, she was hurting, her heart close to erupting. “Because in this life or the next, I will always find you.”
Faythe would always, in every realm and every time, find her way home to them.
