“Nothing wrong with a good hump,” Gunnar said as they stepped into the dell. “That’s right,” Revna said, smiling. “Especially before a scrap. Reminds you of what’s worth fighting for.” She looked at Lif and Halja. “You two should try it.” Lif’s face turned the colour of blood and Gunnar laughed loudly.
The world about her faded and Orka was running to him. Breca was running, too. She dropped her long-axe, skidded to her knees and then he was throwing himself into her arms, Orka stroking his hair, vision blurred with her tears, smiling, laughing, weeping, kissing his face, holding him tight to her in a crush of arms. “Mama, I knew you’d come, I knew you’d come,” he was saying, over and over through his tears.
