Broad competence seems very costly compared to specialization, but it is more likely to save us in the outlier situations of life. Efficiency is good for small tasks where failure has little consequence, but life is not exclusively filled with minor challenges and minimal consequences. We are all going to face extreme events where failure is disastrous.
