Sometimes you have enough ideas to give you momentum to reach the end, and sometimes you get stuck halfway through. Smiley recalls how she dealt with a challenging time writing a story: “Rather than planning and working out in advance, as I had done with most of my earlier novels, I willingly entered a zone of randomness.”
