This is precisely the psychological tactic that was used by the CIA in precipitating and maintaining the monumental, yet very simple, lie of the Apollo missions. During the domestically injurious riots protesting the Vietnam War, president Nixon decided that a unifying pep rally of a perceived successful Moon landing was just what the sickly American patient needed. Do you really think that Nixon was going to risk killing three “National Heroes” on live television shown worldwide, when simply failing to rescue a few kidnapped hostages would permanently ruin a presidency (and especially a potential second term) as it did for President Carter a few years later? How then could Nixon guarantee a successful Moon mission, especially when it was technologically impossible at the time? Simply to stage it – just like a skilled poker player’s bluff.
