“I’m sorry,” I cry. “I’m sorry, Cole. I…” My next words are only whispers in the dark of the night. Secrets I can’t admit to myself. “I’m in love with him.” Against everything I expected, Cole sits down on my bed and squeezes my small hand in his big one. His voice is empathetically soft, “I know, Queen Bee. I know.”
You might think you’re horribly broken into pieces of hate, but I think you’re a beautiful mosaic made of courage.”
As long as your heart beats, mine will beat along with it. That’s what he had told me. Tell me, Jake. Has your heart stopped beating yet? Because you completely annihilated mine.
“You’ll never be alone. I promise you.” Emily whispers, her head nuzzled in my hair.
“I think that’s the thing with love, Billie,” I rasp. “It doesn’t take someone special, just the right person.”
“Is that what you want? I’ll fucking bully you into being mine, Jamie. I’ve done it once, I’ll do it again.”
“Happy ending is a stupid expression,” I add. “That’s for stories that end. Our story doesn’t fucking end. Not until I say so.”
“When a story ends, you get to close the book and start another one. Isn’t that the beauty of stories?”
“You know what’s funny, Angel,” he growls in my ear. “That after everything, you still think you have a say in this relationship.”
“I can’t believe all I had to do was walk into your house and bully you into being my girlfriend again,” he chuckles. “Wow,” I deadpan. “I was actually starting to have nice thoughts about you…” We laugh. It’s deep, loud, magical.
