Yes, I wanted this baby. I wasn’t prepared for it. I doubted Eva was either.
“We hooked up a while back. The condom broke. She’s pregnant. And she’s moving to London.”
“This changes everything.” Tobias nodded to my belly. “Do I have a say in this?”
where I live? Well, no. I have a job. This is my career.”
Maybe I hadn’t loved him enough to give up my dreams. But he hadn’t loved me enough to change his plans.
“My life is here.” I’d heard that one before. “My job is not.”
“This is bigger than your job.” Now it was my turn to get mad. “Then give up yours.”
But it was my job that paid for this home.
Eva raised her chin. “You act like I’m homeless. I’m moving. People move for their jobs.
means that I can pay for my dad’s home. And I like my job. Why is that so wrong?”
Kids needed homes. They needed a resting place. They needed roots and routine.
Which meant if she didn’t change her mind, I wouldn’t have a choice. Once this baby was born,
he or she was coming home to Montana.
If Eva was going to fight for London and the next move and the next move, then I’d fight her for my child.
“It’s my identity,” I told him. “I’m not sure who I am without it anymore. It saved me when I was at my lowest. And it’s more than the money, it’s my pride.”
