The Cathay Building was a cultural landmark, the first skyscraper in all Southeast Asia. It had a famed restaurant, a dance hall, a rooftop garden, and a thirteen-hundred-person, air-conditioned cinema, where moviegoers could relax in armchairs while local waitresses served them aperitifs and lit their cigarettes.
