Prior to the boy’s October 7, 1865, trial, events had been tense in Jamaica. Emancipation nearly thirty years earlier was supposed to unburden enslaved people from their past and render them free laborers who would model their lives on Britain’s middle class. This was the expectation, at least, of radical evangelicals and abolitionists like William Wilberforce.
