On the 30 May [1857] the Legislative Council passed an Act which swept away the time honoured seats of justice, wheresoever rebellion was disporting itself.” Breathtaking in its scope, this new act, the State Offences Act, targeted anyone who rebelled against the Crown or the East India Company and legally enabled their execution, banishment for life, or imprisonment with hard labor.
