The sincerity in his voice had a soothing effect that took me by surprise. I locked gazes with him, and he held mine unwaveringly. Something settled inside of me, and to my shock, a timid smile stretched my lips. “Thank you for standing up for me out there,” I said in a soft voice.
“Me?!” I exclaimed, baffled. “I’m just an ex-gymnast turned monster hunter. I’m not a diplomat.” “No, but you have a beautiful soul, great moral values, and a selfless personality,” Kayog countered. “That makes you the perfect ambassador to show the Ordosians that off-worlders are not so bad.”
My stomach quivered upon hearing the possessive way in which he called me his mate. It should freak me out. This entire mess of a situation should have me running around screaming like a madwoman. And yet, Szaro had an uncanny way of making me feel safe, like everything would be just fine.
“One thing I can promise you, my Serena, is that once you’ve been with an Ordosian, you’ll have no more use for human men,” he whispered in a purring tone that messed me up inside.
“You’re seriously the best mattress ever,” I mumbled, rubbing my face on the soft scales of his neck before trying to snuggle some more. Szaro emitted that happy rattling laughter again, his hand gently caressing my back. “I am pleased to hear it, my mate,” he said in a joyous tone. “It truly pains me to wake you, but we must get going. I promise to play mattress for you again tonight.” “I will hold you to it,” I said grumpily while forcing myself up.
Szaro broke the kiss just long enough to stab his fangs into my neck, injecting me with some of his paralytic venom. It was a small enough quantity that it merely forced my muscles to relax on top of giving me a nice buzz.
I feel this should have been communicated about before he just did it. Another reason I’d appreciate some dialogue during the sex scenes.
When I’d left the village to seek both a mate and a purpose, many had wondered what kind of female would find grace in my eyes. No one, not even me, could have ever imagined it would be someone like my Serena—my beautiful Ashina.
No matter what challenges came our way, no matter who or what tried to tear us apart, she would always catch us and keep our bond flowing towards our joint future.
You are my soulmate. The Goddess plucked you from the stars and sent you to me. You were made for me and for this world. In your heart, I believe you already know it. But take the human time you need. Nothing will change the inevitable.”
