The officers and captains tried to dissuade rumors of cursed ships among the crew, but they could rarely ever succeed in the face of so much evidence. Ships would run aground, would lose power inexplicably, would collide in clear weather—as though possessed with a need to disappear beneath the foaming waves.

A liner that hadn’t tasted blood of some kind was a rarity.
