“Are you finally acknowledging our best friend status?” She challenges me with a single look. “I don’t know. Do best friends give each other boners?”
I’ve already been claimed, even if the person who has me doesn’t know it yet.
“For the record—” My voice is huskier than I intend. “—I wish it would have been me too. I would have made it so fucking good for you, there would’ve been no way you’d forget.”
Because real friends don’t need to try so hard to gain acceptance. It isn’t about impressing them. It’s about letting them see who you are to begin with.
The diamond that Tony got Serenity is pretty, but it’s huge and flashy and expensive. I prefer smaller, less obvious things. Simple.” Her shoulders lift as if embarrassed. “That’s just me, though. I guess I’m weird.” “Nah. You know what you want, and that’s going to make some guy—” My jaw ticks. “—one lucky motherfucker.” She snorts. “Especially if he’s broke.” I chuckle. “Especially then.”
“She told me that there would come a time when I needed to stop making myself so available to people,” he says, brows going up knowingly when I sink into my seat. “The more we try helping people, understanding them, the more we lose ourselves along the way. You don’t always have to be nice to everybody, Sky. Being nice usually only gets you used.”
“From one recovering people-pleaser to another, don’t do that to yourself. I know what you’re thinking. There’s nothing wrong with putting yourself first. She’s stressing you out, making you upset, and that’s not doing any good for either of you.”
“Now, get back to work and stop distracting me, woman. I want to know all about my next man crush.”
