“I thought Doc told you to stop drinking that,” Danny tells her, walking over and pecking her cheek in greeting. Grandma Meadow looks up at him, her eyes narrowed and ready to fight. “I thought your doctor told you to stop playing football and get surgery. Guess we’re both shitty listeners, aren’t we, boy?”
And I’m choosing to let you in. I’m choosing not to let the past choices I made drown me. I want to move on. With my life. With you. I want this to work, Danny.”
All he talked about was how he was going to wife you up, whatever the hell that means.”
“People like to pretend others are the bad people in life, so they don’t feel guilty about the things they’ve done to them. Do not for one second believe you’re the villain.
I’m never going to tell her the truth—that I messaged four different people attached to the book con, including the big-ticket author she’s dying to see, to plead for their help in winning over a girl. It was the very person whose books she introduced me to that responded with the information to claim the tickets in hopes I win Skylar over.
I ask, “Doesn’t my girlfriend look fine?” Skylar doesn’t correct me. She simply beams.
“Don’t you get it by now, Blondie? I’m willing to do anything for you. Be your friend. Be your mentor. Be your bodyguard. What I want more than anything is to be your boyfriend, which means I’m going to keep being a mixture of all those things even if it means me almost punching somebody in the face.”
“I love you too, Blondie. And I plan on proving that to you for as long as you’ll let me.”
“Want you to ride my face first.”
“Baby, the only way you’d hurt me is by not sitting on my face. You’re killing me here.”
“If I wanted to be dramatic, I would have said I’d be honored to die of suffocation by pussy. Imagine that on a gravestone.”
“Will you marry me?” Caleb asks his long-time girlfriend. Raine looks at the crowd wide-eyed before glancing back down at her boyfriend kneeled in front of her. Slowly, her head shakes. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Caleb.” People start muttering around us. Danny cusses under his breath. My jaw drops. Raine whispers, “I can’t.”
