“Scamper, Little Mouse. Find a nook to hide, just like a tiny mouse would.”
I knew something about taking a trek through hell. And the last thing I wanted was for the woman with the haunting eyes and the gentlest spirit I’d ever seen to have visited that demon-filled desert.
Appreciate the kindness but never let yourself rely on it because it will likely disappear one day.
That laugh. The sound was magic, light with a bit of a rasp to it. Like how she’d said my name, I’d never heard anything like it. And I’d spill pizza sauce on myself every single day to hear it again.
“I’m nobody’s hero. Trust me.”
“How about this? You don’t have to tell me anything you don’t want to. Just say ‘next’ or something like that. But don’t lie.”
She was more than gorgeous. She was captivating. Her beauty was the kind that stole your breath, but it was the authenticity of it that held you rapt.
“One step at a time sounds like a good philosophy to me.” Her mouth curved. “Thank you for leaving the lights on for me, Beckett.” “Always.”
“I know. I’ve done this kind of work before. Trust isn’t something you can demand. You have to earn it.”
“Sees more than most of the people around her. Appreciates the little things. I don’t know. I feel at peace when I’m around her.”
“I’m here. I’m breathing. I’m happy. He didn’t win. And even the worst things that happen to us can give us a gift. I like that I see what others might miss.”
“It’s life, Beckett. We don’t have control over what happens to us, only how we react to it.” “I manage to fuck that up, too.”
“Any time you start to believe those lies, you come to me. I’ll tell you the truth.”
“Anytime you start taking on the weight of the world, you come to me. I’ll remind you to set it down.” His mouth curved. “Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.” “Me, too.”
“I like seeing you experience new things. It reminds me that life still has an infinite number of possibilities in store for us all.”
“Addie, you made it through hell and came out the other side. You’re fighting for everything you want, even when it can feel impossibly hard. There’s no doubt in my mind that you can do whatever you set your mind to. I’m just glad you’re letting me come along for the ride.”
“You are an actual angel from heaven, aren’t you?”
“You think I don’t know that? I know she’s been through hell. I also know she’s a fighter. Stronger than anyone I’ve ever met. She’s not weak.”
“We need the laughter, Beckett. It’s what keeps us human. I lost it for too long. Now that I have it back, I’m not letting it go. I won’t let you lose it either.”
“I don’t know what I did to deserve you.” “I feel the same way.”
“I don’t want to sleep alone tonight.” “I don’t want to, either.”
“Thank you for sharing last night. It means a lot that you trusted me with that.” “I do trust you.”
“Beauty in the strength that carried you through. Beauty in how you refused to be broken. Beauty that you never let yourself become cruel like him. Addie, there isn’t a thing about you that isn’t beautiful.”
“You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. But how you look is just one part of that. You are so much more. How you see the world, how you see me. You don’t realize what a gift that is.”
“I’ve never felt the way I do when I’m with you.”
“I want that first date and butterflies. I want you to see me like any other woman.” It was Beckett’s turn to frown down. “Addie, you could never be just any other woman to me. You’ve been more since the moment I laid eyes on you. Something tugged at me, making me want to lean a little closer. You wove a spell around me, and you didn’t even know it.”
“Why would you want to settle for normal when you’re extraordinary? Everything around you is gray, and yet you’re cast in every color I could ever imagine.”
“Life is full of pain. We’ll hurt each other. But I trust us both to make it right when that happens. I trust that we’ll learn and grow and do better next time.”
“What’s the code word? Say it, and everything stops.” “What if I don’t want it to stop?”
“Before doesn’t matter. All that matters is us. Here. Now.”
“You’re in love with her.”
“I’ve never felt more alive than when I lose myself with you.”
“He’s your launchpad.” I looked at Hadley in question. “He’s the place you always come back to. But he also sends you out into the universe.”
“This might be new, but I know one thing for sure. I don’t want to go to sleep without you. I want to get you a million different kinds of takeout to try. I want to make fun of dumb commercials with you. I want to rub your feet while you read. What I don’t want is a life without you in it.”
“I should’ve told Addie how much I loved her. I didn’t want to scare her, but I’d give anything to have told her.” “You’ll get to tell her. And you won’t waste a second of the time you guys have together now.”
